Artist: Christian Segedy
Description: Oil on Canvas 24×30 in. (2017)
In his masterwork, The Prince, Niccolò Machiavelli called the Dominican Friar Girolamo Savonarola “an unarmed prophet”; a pejorative label that could aptly be laid at the feet of countless other martyrs, not the least of which would be Christ himself. This symbolic narrative places the passion of Jesus Christ outside of it’s literal historical context and into the setting of 15th Century Florence, where Savonarola was hanged and then burned alongside two other Dominican Friars who also preached against Church corruption. The ahistorical nature of this scene, combined with other anachronistic elements, reinforces the universal message of the crucifixion across time and space.
